SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah hunter trapped overnight in a blizzard dug himself into the snow to survive before he was found in a remote mountain area, police said.
Trevor Valentine, 38, remained hospitalized in serious condition Friday after he tried to hike to a road near the Idaho border, the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office said.
Valentine had gone hunting Wednesday west of Snowville and texted his wife that evening to say he was stuck, sheriff's Chief Deputy Dale Ward said in a statement.
Valentine had planned to hike three miles to a state road but never made it.
His family called police when they couldn't find him.
Search and rescue crews got to the area near Wildcat Mountain that night but were stymied by blizzard conditions and drifting snow.
After sunrise Thursday, winds calmed and searchers on snowmobiles found Valentine. He'd tried to dig himself into the snow as protection from the temperatures that dipped well below zero with the wind chill, police said.
He was flown to a Salt Lake City-area hospital.
