SHARPSVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- A drunken Pennsylvania man killed his friend with a knee to the stomach after the other man tried to give the suspect a ride home from an American Legion club on July 4. Fred Earl Abbott, 36, drank about a dozen beers on Friday, then drove himself to the local Legion bar, where he had three or four more beers before the bartender cut him off, Sharpsville police say. Several people offered to drive Abbott home, including 50-year-old Charles Frederick, who recently had heart surgery, police say. Instead, Abbott kneed Frederick in the abdomen, which led to his death, police say. Online court records don't list an attorney for Abbott, who faces a preliminary hearing July 11 on charges of involuntary manslaughter, simple assault and public drunkenness. He is in jail on the charges.
