Berwick seeks volunteers shovelers

BERWICK — Berwick Borough is looking for volunteers to help shovel sidewalks for the elderly and handicapped in case predictions of up to 6 inches of snow are correct.

Mayor Tim Burke said the number of volunteers for the program have dropped off dramatically since it was introduced in 2014.

The borough requires residents to shovel their walks or face citations, but council didn't want to penalize those who physically couldn't clear the snow. So then-President Alvin Hill and Burke started the volunteer shovel corps.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the local area including Columbia County for late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening.

Scout troops, service organizations, church groups, athletic teams, or any other groups or individuals who can help should call Berwick City Hall at 570-752-2723.
