BERWICK -- One Berwick woman is in the hospital after a would-be thief shoved her to the ground and tried to snatch her laptop here Saturday night, police say. It was the first in a pair of recent attempted strong arm robberies in the borough, although authorities can't say if the two are related. "These seem to be crimes of opportunity," said Berwick Police Detective Greg Martin. In the first attempt, a woman was working on her computer while standing outside CVS in the Kmart Plaza on West Front Street around 10 p.m. when her attacker walked up and started making conversation. After a brief exchange, he tried to grab her laptop without success and ran off, police say. The woman walked down to the Family Dollar Store, but the man returned to make a second brazen attempt. This time, he shoved the woman to the ground before trying to grab her valuables, but the commotion drew attention from workers still inside the store and he ran off empty-handed, police say. The woman, whose identity was not released by police, was injured when she hit the ground and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. She was still in serious condition Tuesday, Martin said. On Monday, another Berwick woman was walking on West Second Street near the Rite Aid parking lot on her way to work just before 6 a.m. when she realized she was being followed, police say. After keeping his distance, a man ran up and tried to grab the woman's purse, knocking her to the ground in the struggle. But once again the assailant ran off empty-handed, and the woman, who was not hurt, continued on to her job before reporting the crime later in the day, authorities note. At this point, it's unclear it the two cases are related. "I can't say for sure, however they are very similar," Martin said. Both suspects are described as white men in their late teens or early twenties. Both had distinct marks on their faces and a thin build. Martin urged citizens leaving or going to work late at night and early in the morning to exercise caution. And anyone with information should call Berwick Police at 570-752-3677 or the Columbia County 9-1-1 Center at 570-784-6300.
