EAST BERLIN, Pa. (AP) -- Firefighters battling a house fire here found hundreds of snakes inside. Crews "stopped counting after 200-something, " Chief Larry Anderson of the Wellsville Fire Company told The York Dispatch. The total number was "a three-digit number," he said. The person who owns the Washington Township home was reportedly breeding the snakes, officials said. Anderson said smoke detectors alerted the two people inside, and they were able to escape with their dog. But the heat and smoke killed three-quarters of the nonvenomous snakes that were kept in cages in the basement, the chief said. Authorities in York County say the blaze was reported shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday. Anderson said the fire marshal is expected to issue a cause Wednesday, but nothing points to the blaze being suspicious.
