BERWICK — A Berwick woman died last week due to a drug overdose, the first to be reported in area this year.

Sherry Lunger, 46, died at Geisinger Medical Center last Friday after being airlifted from Berwick Hospital Center the previous day, Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn said.

Lynn said Lunger was found in cardiac arrest when emergency medical responders arrived at her apartment at 1117 Fifth Ave. on Thursday morning.

Police found drug paraphernalia near her body, and those items were sent to the police lab for analysis to determine what narcotic or drug mixture resulted in the overdose, Lynn said.

Columbia County had 22 drug overdose deaths in 2016.
