Car burglar hits Nescopeck

NESCOPECK - When borough Police Chief Richard Haraschak started work Wednesday morning, several reports of break-ins into unlocked vehicles were waiting for him.

Some, but not all, of the cars had something of value taken from them. One woman reported having wrapped gifts taken from her car, he said.

Haraschak said it isn’t unusual to see this type of crime during the holiday season.

In this case, the thief seems to have rummaged through unlocked cars, even if he or she didn’t find anything to take.

“The person seemed to be going through glove compartments,” said Haraschak. “In one case, a center console was broken.”

Now, police are hoping to get tips from the public to narrow down when the break-ins may have occurred.

Eight reports so far
“If we know one person got home 9 p.m., and his car was okay, and another person got up at 4 a.m. and his car had been broken into, we have a better idea when these incidents occurred,” the chief said.  “Some residents have surveillance cameras, but we need to have some idea of when this happened.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Haraschak said he had received eight break-in reports, but he anticipated more would come in when people returned from from work.

The thefts occurred primarily on the 600 and 700 block of Second Street, but police also had one report of an incident on Worcester Street — a cross-street.

Haraschak hasn’t seen car break-ins for four or five years.

Call cops
He is encouraging anyone who noticed someone had been in their car to notify borough police at 570-752-3799 or by email at nescopeckpd@pa.metrocast.net.

“It’s important that we have as much information as possible, to put together how this happened,” Haraschak said.

The department is reminding everyone in the borough to remember to keep their car doors locked.
