BERWICK – A man robbed the First Columbia Bank at 1919 W. Front St. this morning, police say.

A man with a thin build, gray hair and facial hair demanded and received money at the bank around 11:15 a.m. He did not display a weapon, police said.

He then fled on foot across an open field to Spring Garden Avenue, where he got into a dark SUV or pickup truck and sped away, headed east.

Police say the man was roughly 5 feet, 10 inches tall, wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and walking with a limp.

Officers from the Berwick, Briar Creek Township and South Centre Township police departments, along with sheriff's officers and State Police troopers were assisting in the search. Police Chief Ken Strish said the department was also calling in specialty officers and alerting the FBI.

Anyone who may have seen the man is asked to call police at 570-752-3677 or through Columbia County Communications at 570-784-6300.

Bank President Lance Diehl said no employees at the bank were harmed in the robbery, but he said the branch would remain closed for the rest of the day.
