7:45 P.M. UPDATE

PennDOT says there are three long-term detours in place for roads damaged in this past month's flooding.

First, Millville Road. Here's a picture of the road, by Photographer Jimmy May:

PennDOT said that Millville Road is closed between Route 42 in Hemlock Township and Route 11 in the Town of Bloomsburg due to damage to a bridge. A detour is in place using Route 42 and Route 11.

The department currently is assessing the extent of the damage to the road and will evaluate any repairs that need to be made. However, the detour is expected to remain in place until September.

In addition, in Columbia County, Route 339 remains closed between Dog Town Road and Mountain Shadow Lane in Beaver Township due to damage to a bridge caused by flooding in late July.

The detour uses Scotch Valley Drive, Beaver Valley Road and Shadow Mountain Road.

In Montour County, PennDOT has put a long-term detour in place for Route 44  due to damage from the recent flooding.

Route 44 is closed between Sportsmans Road and Gearhart Road in Anthony Township. The detour uses Route 54, Preserve Road and PP and L Road.

6:45 P.M. UPDATE

The National Weather Service now expects the Susquehanna River to crest at 21.2 feet at midnight between Wednesday and Thursday. At that level, the fairgrounds and surrounding areas would be inundated. At 22 feet, a number of homes between the fairgrounds and the river are effected.

Columbia County Resiliency Officer Eric Stahley said most of the gates on the town's floodwall, which protects Autoneum and the old Windsor Foods plant, have already been put in place.

1:45 P.M. UPDATE

In the flood-struck areas of Benton and Bloomsburg on Tuesday morning, residents were pumping out basements, cleaning out flood mud and trying to help one another out, reporters in the two towns report.

In Benton, School Superintendent James Geffken said the elementary school suffered some flooding Monday, largely to the classrooms closest to the creek. On Tuesday, workers were cleaning up, and Geffken was hoping that the schools may still be able to open on their scheduled first day of school, Wednesday, Aug. 22.

In Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg Fair officials reported that the exhibition buildings on the fairgrounds all had about a foot of water inside. But, the fairgrounds had prepared earlier in the month, raising things that could be damaged,  and it suffered no major damage.

Meanwhile, Bloomsburg Police say Millville Road is closed heading out of town and likely won't be reopened for some time.
