U.S. stocks opened sharply higher after the U.S. announced a trade deal with China.

The U.S. and China put a 90-day pause on most of the tariffs the countries had imposed on one another. Effective from Wednesday, the U.S. will temporarily reduce tariffs on China to 30%, down from 145%, and China will reduce tariffs on U.S. goods to 10%, down from 125%.

"This was a larger-than-expected de-escalation...though the negotiation process will likely remain challenging," said Lynn Song, chief economist of greater China at Dutch bank ING.

Acting FEMA administrator replaced after contradicting Trump on abolishing agency

The Trump administration is shaking up the leadership at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a day after the acting administrator said he opposed abolishing the agency, which Trump has suggested.

Cameron Hamilton will no longer be acting FEMA administrator. David Richardson is taking over that job, according to a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, who did not give a reason for the change.

Pressed during a May 7 House committee hearing about eliminating FEMA, Hamilton said he didn't support it.

Trekalon Price, 25, is being sought for felony reporting a false alarm or reporting an emergency in connection with an incident at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, the charging document obtained by USA TODAY says.

Landmark cryptocurrency bill blocked over concerns about Trump's connections

WASHINGTON – Senate Democrats blocked a bipartisan bill to create a legal framework for cryptocurrency after concerns about President Donald Trump's connections to the industry threw negotiations over the bill into chaos.

The chamber voted 48-49 on May 8, averting a final vote on the legislation. Two Republicans, Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Josh Hawley of Missouri, voted with all present Democrats against it. Hawley told reporters after the vote that he wanted "big tech prohibitions" in the legislation, while Paul raised concerns that regulations could hurt the industry.

'We will miss him deeply': Fire department in Texas mourns death of beloved dog

Riggs, a beloved firehouse dog in Texas, was found dead after going missing from his station.

The Midlothian Fire Department shared on May 6 that their station dog and companion died after being struck by a vehicle.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share Riggs has been located. Sadly, he was struck by a vehicle and did not survive," the fire department said in a post on Facebook. "While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we are incredibly thankful for the overwhelming support from our community."

Zillow stopped showing certain home listings in May under new listing policy

Real estate giant Zillow is shaking up the housing industry with new standards that the company says fall in line with new regulations aimed at transparency, but others believe they represent a power play by the nation's largest residential real estate listing service. 

The company announced that any property listing that has been publicly marketed to consumers — whether through yard signs, in social media posts or on a brokerage website — but not listed on the local MLS within one business day, will no longer appear on Zillow or its daughter company, Trulia.

In win for Trump, Supreme Court allows ban on transgender troops to take effect

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court will allow President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the military to take effect while court challenges continue.

In a win for the president's efforts to curb rights for transgender people, an ideologically divided court on May 6 agreed to the administration's request for help after lower courts paused the ban.

The court’s three liberal members − Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson − said they would have rejected the request.

Trump says U.S. will immediately stop bombing Houthi militants in Yemen

WASHINGTON − President Donald Trump said the U.S. will end airstrikes on Houthi militants in Yemen effective immediately.

"We will stop the bombings," Trump announced from the Oval Office.

Trump ordered Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who he tapped as his acting national security adviser last week, to pass on the message to the Iran-backed militant group.

The Trump administration began a costly bombing campaign on March 15 in response to Houthi attacks on commercial shippers in the Red Sea.
