Dog that ran half marathon dies a week later

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- A dog that became an Internet sensation after crashing an Indiana half marathon has died just a week after receiving a medal for completing the race. The 100-pound chocolate Labrador retriever named Boogie ran most of the 13.1 miles in the Oct. 5 Evansville event after escaping his leash the night before. Owner Jerry Butts made an appointment for the dog to be neutered after the race to curb his wandering ways. The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/16kYycp ) that Boogie died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. He was 10.

Pa. hiker airlifted to hospital after cliff fall

READING, Pa. (AP) -- Emergency responders rescued a hiker who fell about 30 feet down a cliff along the Appalachian Trail in eastern Pennsylvania. Authorities say the woman lost her footing Saturday while sightseeing with a group at the Berks County site known as the Pinnacle. Kempton fire chief Matthew Brett says the woman was airlifted to a hospital near Allentown. Her condition could not be obtained Saturday afternoon.

NY man charged with trying to support terrorists

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) -- For 25 years Marcos Alonso Zea lived in America, working most recently as a clerk at a home improvement store on New York's Long Island. But federal authorities have arrested the U.S.-born man, charging him with conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country, attempting to support terrorists and al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, and obstruction of justice. Zea, who nodded at his parents as he was escorted into the court room at his arraignment Friday, pleaded not guilty and was detained without bail.

Confused woman missing after wandering away from home

BERWICK -- A 71-year-old woman who'd been showing sings of confusion or possible dementia wandered off from an East Front Street home late Friday night and had not been seen since, family members say. Judy Patterson has been staying with her daughter, Neta Hartig, at 132 East Front St., while the family gets Patterson medical attention to find out what's been causing her recent confusion, Hartig said. Hartig awoke around 9 a.m. Saturday to find her mother missing, police said.

Police: Pa. teacher on heroin passed out in class

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Police say a substitute teacher at a Pittsburgh-area high school took heroin before work and passed out in class. KDKA-TV reports that Bellevue Police Sgt. Mike Hudson says 26-year-old Christopher Chiappetta, of Pittsburgh, was arrested Wednesday after he passed out in front of 11 students. Authorities say they found four baggies of heroin in Chiappetta's pocket and marijuana in his car, and that he confessed to using heroin around 6 a.m. Wednesday. Chiappetta faces drug charges as well as an endangering children count.

Pa. priest accuser, 26, dies days before hearing

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A 26-year-old accuser in the latest priest-abuse case in Philadelphia has died of what his lawyers called a suspected drug overdose. The man's death this past weekend came days before the scheduled preliminary hearing Thursday for the Rev. Robert Brennan. His lawyer had met with him last Friday. "He had really straightened out his life. He was motivated to pursue justice. This was his goal, so this was shocking to all of us," lawyer Marci Hamilton said. "He made it through college. He was battling demons all the way through."

6 Pa. teens charged in melee that injured teacher

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (AP) -- Six teenagers are facing charges stemming from a fight in their suburban Philadelphia high school during which a teacher was knocked unconscious. The melee was caught on video at Upper Darby High School on Oct. 8, when police say two groups of students began fighting outside the school cafeteria. Authorities said a 30-year-old teacher trying to break up the fight was punched, knocked to the ground and jumped on, suffering a concussion and torn ligaments to his left leg.

2 convicted killers mistakenly released in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Two convicted killers serving life in a Florida prison were mistakenly freed recently after forged court documents reduced their sentences, authorities said. Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker were released separately from a prison in the Panhandle in late September and early October, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said. "These two individuals are out. They shouldn't be, and we want to get them back in custody," sheriff's office spokesman Angelo Nieves said. "This shouldn't have happened, but it did, and our concern is to get these individuals into custody."
