Mexican monster truck wreck kills 8, hurts dozens

CHIHUAHUA, Mexico (AP) -- An out-of-control monster truck shot into a crowd of spectators at a Mexican air show, killing eight people and hurting 79, officials said. The driver was detained Sunday on suspicion of manslaughter and officials said they were investigating possible safety violations in the setup of the show. Carlos Gonzalez, spokesman for the Chihuahua state prosecutors' office, said driver Francisco Velazquez appeared to lose control of the truck after leaping over cars it was crushing during a demonstration at the "Extreme Aeroshow" on Saturday.

Oregon bartender gets $17,500 tip

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) -- An Oregon bartender just got the tip of a lifetime. One of Aurora Kephart's regulars at Conway's Restaurant and Lounge in Springfield often tips her with Keno tickets from the Oregon Lottery. On Tuesday evening, the man who wishes to remain anonymous asked Kephart to choose two. When she checked the numbers, Kephart's first ticket won $5. The second turned into a $17,500 gratuity. "The look on his face was incredible," Kephart, 25, told The Register-Guard newspaper (http://is.gd/I9P2nA ). "I automatically handed it back to him; it was his ticket."

Pa. doctor faces charges in suspicious death probe

YORK, Pa. (AP) -- A doctor in central Pennsylvania is facing charges stemming from the case of a man found dead in his car last month. Police said 48-year-old Dr. John Yelcick of Manheim Township drove the body of an acquaintance from the doctor's Lancaster County home to a York County parking lot. Investigators contend 43-year-old David Sellers died on Sept. 13 at Yelcick's home. Seller's body was found in his own car four days later. The York County coroner says the body showed no signs of foul play. Toxicology test results are pending.

3 guards charged with mistreating Pa. inmates

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Three county prison guards in Pennsylvania face charges they mistreated inmates by having them engage in a range of activities for their entertainment, from eating a spoonful of cinnamon to taking pepper spray to the face, in exchange for food and other privileges. State police said Friday the three York County prison guards, currently suspended without pay, were charged with one count of official oppression and one count of harassment.

Pa. gov: Gay marriage is like brother marrying sister

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Pennsylvania Republican Gov. Tom Corbett compared the marriage of same-sex couples to the marriage of a brother and sister during an appearance on a Friday morning TV news show, a remark that was quickly condemned by advocates involved in the state's ongoing battle over whether to allow gays to wed. Corbett was on WHP-TV in Harrisburg when an anchor asked about a statement his lawyers made in a recent court filing, comparing the marriage of gay couples to the marriage of children because neither can legally wed in the state.

Woman killed in DC chase was 'delusional'

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Connecticut woman shot to death by police after she tried to drive through barricades outside the White House held the delusional belief that the president was communicating with her, a federal law enforcement official said Friday. The official had been briefed on the investigation but spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

Scranton Diocese employee accused of $340K theft

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) -- A longtime employee of the Diocese of Scranton is charged with stealing more than $340,000 from a fund that was meant for the poor. Lackawanna County prosecutors said 66-year-old Sharon Warunek was an office worker in charge of charitable donations for Roman Catholic missions that help the poor but used those donations as her personal bank account. The 27-year employee of the diocese has been charged with felony theft. Investigators say she used the donation money to pay credit card bills.
