SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — At least 80 miners became trapped in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, with rescue efforts underway and no injuries or deaths reported, according to government officials.

The miners became trapped when a portion of a zinc and copper mine in the Cerros of Maimon collapsed, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The mine is located in a rural area northwest of the capital, Santo Domingo, where relatives anxiously awaited the rescue of their loved ones.

US and Australia sign critical-minerals agreement as a way to counter China

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a critical-minerals deal at the White House on Monday as the U.S. eyes the continent’s rich rare-earth resources at a time when China is imposing tougher rules on exporting its own critical minerals abroad.

The two leaders described the agreement as an $8.5 billion deal between the allies. Trump said it had been negotiated over several months.
