Trump approval rating: Recent polls mostly steady through late May

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump’s approval rating is steady for another week, keeping the second-term president at a consistently lower-than-average approval rating throughout May.

Trump in mid-April ended the first three months of his second term with an average 45% job approval rating, according to an analysis by Gallup. Though higher than the 41% he earned in his first term during the same period, it is well below the 60% average during the first three months of all other U.S. presidents' first terms since 1952.

Police search for man suspected of fatally stabbing his 2 sisters in Chicago area

CHICAGO – Police in a Chicago suburb are searching for a man suspected of stabbing a woman and a young girl, identified by local media as his sisters.

The Streamwood Police Department identified 25-year-old Jalonie Jenkins as the suspect involved in the killing of a 21-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl in Streamwood, Illinois, on Wednesday evening, May 28.

Jenkins' last known location was in Bensenville, a suburb near the Chicago O'Hare International Airport, police said.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish a commission that was tasked with investigating chronic illnesses and childhood diseases, which culminated in the “Make Our Children Healthy Again” assessment that was published May 22.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump said he will consider pardoning people convicted for conspiring during the COVID-19 pandemic to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

“I will take a look at it,” Trump said during a May 28 event at the White House in response to a reporter’s question.  “I did watch the trial. It looked to me like somewhat of a railroad job.”

Trump administration agrees to end use of race, gender in highway, transit contracts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump administration said on Wednesday it has agreed to end the U.S. Transportation Department's consideration of race or gender when awarding billions of dollars in federal highway and transit project funding set aside for disadvantaged small businesses. 

A judge in September in Kentucky ruled that a federal program enacted in 1983 that treats businesses owned by racial minorities and women as presumptively disadvantaged and eligible for such funding violated the U.S. Constitution's equal protection guarantees.

Black bear crashes through attic, falls onto kitchen stove: See pictures

PINEVILLE, KENTUCKY – A black bear was found sitting on the stove of kitchen after crashing through the ceiling of a home in Kentucky.

In a post on Facebook, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement said authorities responded to a call for a black bear at a residence in Bell County around 5 a.m. on May 21.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the bear sitting on the stove in the kitchen.

2 dead, 39 injured when Greyhound bus crashes in Tennessee

JACKSON, TENNESSEE – Two people died and nearly 40 people were injured in a Greyhound bus crash on a western Tennessee highway, according to first responders.

Lt. Christopher Hosick of the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed the two deaths in a statement on May 27.

"The collision involved a passenger vehicle and a large passenger bus," Hosick wrote in an email. "I can confirm two fatalities and multiple others with injuries. The investigation is still ongoing."

Triple-digit heat in forecast as California braces for scorching summer

Much of California is set for its first heat wave of the season and several parts of the state could experience record-high temperatures, weather experts predict.

The surge of warmth is expected to sweep across the state, peaking on Friday, May 30, as temperatures could soar near or above 100 degrees in the warmest deserts and valleys this weekend, said Heather Zehr, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather on May 27.
