Newspaper to pay for town's Fourth of July fireworks

BLOOMSBURG -- Town taxpayers won't foot the bill for Fourth of July fireworks after the Press Enterprise agreed to pay for the show, and even increase its budget, the town said in a press release. The donation from the newspaper company will exceed the previous $8,600 budget for the show, said Lauren Martz, assistant town administrator. That budget increase, along with the change of the fireworks launching site to the soccer fields at Town Park, should allow the fireworks company, Skyshooters Displays of Wapwallopen, to add special effects, like tiering fireworks that explode at both low and higher levels, Martz said. Bloomsburg also found a sponsor for the Catawissa Military Band. Town residents Joe and Sheree Martarano are donating $500 to pay for the band and an amp for the bandshell. Mr. Martarano is running for town council in the fall. The town had voted earlier this month to hold the show and foot the bill itself if sponsors could not be found. Other than the change in launch location, Martz said this year's display will be much like previous years, with the band playing at the bandshell and vendors providing food in Town Park.
