Shed fire draws fire crews to Wonderview

MAIN TWP. - A fire at a storage shed off Scenic Avenue in the Wonderview housing development here sent a plume of smoke into the air visible from Lime Ridge just before noon, but quick action by neighbors and firefighters kept it from spreading to nearby houses or cars. The fire started in a shed near a house owned by Roy Smith at 735 Scenic Avenue East. It quickly spread to the leaves surrounding the shed, neighbors said.

Police seek car possibly involved in pedestrian accident

BLOOMSBURG -- Police believe the dark car pictured in the security camera footage shown here was involved in a pedestrian hit-and-run earlier this month near Town Hall. A vehicle struck Steven Williams as he crossed East Street from Steph's Subs to Husky Korners around 2 p.m. Nov. 1, police have said. Workers at Bower Security combed through security camera footage in the area. Eric Bower said this car appears to have struck Williams, and then fled the scene turning on East Third Street. That's where a surveillance camera on Arcus Brothers captured these images.

Girl, 14, dialed 9-1-1 on drunk-driving mom

DANVILLE -- A teen girl used a bathroom break as an excuse to get her drunken mother to pull off the highway, then phoned police to report her mom for DUI, authorities say. The two were on Interstate 80, headed back to Warren in western Pennsylvania from a visit with a family member in Pottsville March 24, prosecutors said. As their Chevrolet Cruze swerved across the lanes, the girl tried to get her mom to pull over, to no avail, prosecutors say.

Geisinger wins Pink Glove dance video contest

DANVILLE -- Geisinger took first place in the national Pink Glove Dance Competition, a fundraising event for breast cancer prevention, the organization announced Friday. Geisinger's video drew more views than any other in the viral-video contest, sponsor Medline said. The contest will donate $25,000 to the American Cancer Society of Central/Northeastern Pennsylvania on Geisinger's behalf. Have a look at the winning video here:

GUILTY: Jury convicts driver in friend's crash death

BLOOMSBURG -- Jurors have convicted Kyle Shaffer of Stillwater on all counts in the death of Russell Hack in a crash north of Orangeville in 2011. The jury took about three hours to reach the verdict, which was just announced at the Columbia County Courthouse Thursday afternoon. Shaffer, 29, will serve at least three years in prison, the minimum sentence for the vehicular homicide charge. He will be sentenced later.

Man allegedly steals $82G that was to pay for wife's surgery

BERWICK -- A man cashed almost $82,000 in insurance checks that were supposed to go toward his estranged wife's surgery, then spent the money with his new girlfriend, police said. The purchases made by Michael Remaley, 28, and Beth Ann Sample, 29, include reptiles, tattoos, televisions and used cars, said his wife, Linda Remaley. They've both been charged with felonies in connection to the theft. In the mean time, Mrs. Remaley is now fending off efforts by Geisinger Medical Center to collect $83,041.60 for two emergency surgeries performed in January.

BU: Some students may have mumps

BLOOMSBURG -- University officials are warning students and employees that some students have been experiencing possible symptoms of mumps over the past two weeks. Those already vaccinated against mumps run a low risk of getting the disease, which often triggers swollen glands in front of and below the ear, headache, fever, and earache. Anyone who develops the symptoms should seek medical care, the university cautioned. BU also advised students to check with their doctor's office to see if they have been vaccinated.
