Ex-pastor bilked church for $250G, charges state

GREENWOOD TWP. — The former pastor of New Testament Assembly of God Church stole more than $250,000 in church funds, telling police he used the money to help others and pay for his children’s college tuition, charge say. 

David Dominic Rosenberger, 52, 252 S. State St., Millville, had been pastor at New Testament  since 2000. He allegedly had been stealing money for the last eight years, since 2011.

In July of this year, church board members became aware of irregularities in the church’s finances and contacted the Pennsylvania State Police. 

Danville woman pleads guilty to $185k con

DANVILLE — A Danville woman with a long history of thievery has admitted she conned $185,000 from her boyfriend’s grandfather over a two-year period.

Heather Sharkuski, 35, hesitated and spoke quietly with her lawyer in Montour County Court Monday before agreeing to plead guilty to the third-degree felony theft. She could spend up to seven years in prison.

Sharkuski was arrested last February after her then-boyfriend’s grandfather, David Bird, called police to say she had duped him into loaning her $185,000 between September 2016 and January 2018.

Route 487 wreck leaves man injured

FISHING CREEK TWP. — A 34-year-old man was flown to the hospital after a high-speed crash along State Route 487 Friday morning.

Leevern Oliver, Millville, was conscious following the 9 a.m. accident just south of Young’s Automotive, but was in “rough shape,” according to witnesses.

Police say Oliver was speeding in his 2009 Chevrolet Impala when it drifted off the right side of the road in front of a home at 3482 State Route 487.

Car slams into Bloom auto repair shop

SCOTT TWP. — Mechanic George Eddy stood inside Roberts Automotive Thursday afternoon and watched as an out-of-control car came racing toward the very window he was looking out of.

The northbound white Chrysler 200 rammed into the Lightstreet Road business’s building near Bloomsburg University’s campus around 1:50 p.m. after swerving across both lanes. 

Traffic backed up on I-80 west today

SCOTT TWP. — Traffic between the Lime Ridge and Lightstreet exits on Interstate 80 is backed up at this hour, PennDOT says.

Motorists traveling on Interstate 80 westbound are advised there is a traffic backlog between mile markers 239 and 236 due to a roadway rehabilitation project in Scott Township, Columbia County.

As of 2 p.m.. today, traffic is backed up about 2.4 miles east of the Route 487 (Lightstreet) exit.

Danville head football coach resigns

DANVILLE — Danville head football coach Jim Keiser resigned from his position Monday after spending the past two weeks suspended from the sidelines by the school, he said.

Keiser remains on administrative leave from his district job, working as an aide with emotional support students. 

That suspension is the result of the allegations made against him as a football coach, not his job performance in the classroom, he pointed out. He’ll return to work on Monday, he added.

Bloomsburg Fairground vandal pleads guilty

BLOOMSBURG — One of the teen vandals who went on a spree through the Bloomsburg Fairground in January pleaded guilty Friday, and will get a chance to avoid a felony conviction on his record.

Jerry Lee Derr III, 19, of 497 W. Third St., Bloomsburg, admitted that he and a 17-year-old Bloomsburg boy trespassed on the fairgrounds, broke in to the Barton House and one-room schoolhouse and took several historic items.

In addition, the pair damaged electrical components of the Skyride’s control box on the nearby midway.

Fire damages Millville home

MILLVILLE — A fire that ravaged the back of a home here Monday night left fire crews trying to quell smoldering sections for nearly an hour.

The fire at 468 S. State St. started just before midnight, starting at the southwest corner of the house, said Millville Fire Chief Rob Bower.

“We’re not really sure what happened,” said resident Craig Omlor.

Omlor and his wife, Beth, and a few of their children had been home when the fire started, but everyone got out unharmed, Bower said.

The family’s small dog succumbed to the flames.

Bloom high, middle schools evacuated because of welding smoke

BLOOMSBURG — Smoke from ongoing construction work on a new learning center prompted a brief evacuation of Bloomsburg Area high and middle schools on Thursday morning.

Welders began installing new ceiling beams for a room between two gym areas when smoke began seeping into a gym locker room where a class was underway about 9:20 a.m., according to Bloomsburg Fire Lt. Todd Davis.

Geisinger to offer paid parental leave

DANVILLE — Geisinger employees who become parents will now be able to take up to two weeks off with pay to devote time to their new family member.

The health system announced its new paid parental leave benefit yesterday, saying it takes effect Sunday and applies to births, adoptions, legal guardianships or foster care.

Full- and part-time employees who have worked for Geisinger at least six months qualify for the paid leave.

If parents with a new child both work for Geisinger, they both qualify for the benefit.
