Chief: Fire damaged Berwick trailer

BERWICK — Dozens of firefighters quickly contained a blaze in a mobile home here late Monday, but the trailer was extensively damaged, an official said.
Everyone got out of the residence, and no one was hurt, Fire Chief Randy Remphrey said.
The blaze at 230 W. 17th St. was reported just before 10 p.m.
Firefighters killed power to the trailer, Remphrey said. They were still investigating the cause and circumstances at press time.
The residence was surrounded by yellow emergency tape by 10:15 p.m.

Detour around Klondike Road

LIBERTY TWP. — A damaged drainage pipe has closed Klondike Road here between Route 642 and Valley Road, PennDOT officials said.

The department plans to replace the pipe and reopen the road by Tuesday afternoon.

Until then, motorists are being detoured through Route 642 and Route 54.
 

 

 

Woman reported being sprayed by intruder in East Berwick, cops say

SALEM TWP. — A woman reportedly tried to talk her way into a resident’s house late Tuesday night, then sprayed the homeowner with a household cleaning chemical when she was turned away, police say.

Officers received a call around 10:30 p.m. from a homeowner near Salem Elementary School, said Sgt. Thomas Hegland.

The homeowner said the brown-haired woman, described as about 5-foot, 10-inches tall, in her 30s, wearing pants and a jacket, knocked on her door, said her child was missing and asked to come in.

Shots fired in Pine Street neighborhood

BERWICK — Three men exchanged gunfire here Monday morning, narrowly missing a four-year-old girl and her mother caught in the crossfire, and shattering windows and doors at nearby businesses.

William Benedito, 1021 Pine Street, says he was outside his home with his wife and four-year-old daughter around 8:30 a.m. when he saw two men with guns jump out of a white van near the entrance to Weis Markets.

The men began shooting at him, so he returned four shots — all that were loaded in his gun’s magazine, he said.

Southern's Julian Fleming heading to Ohio State

Southern Columbia wide receiver Julian Fleming announced via a Twitter video Friday morning that he'll be attending The Ohio State University for college.

The video, which opens with Fleming on the phone with his mother, included highlights from Fleming's career at Southern Columbia, and then shots from the colleges recruiting him, including Alabama, Clemson, Penn State and Ohio State.

It ends with Fleming saying "To you, I am a football player. To you, home is a place. To me, home is a feeling. Ohio State is home. Go Bucks!"

Man arrested, charged with hitting baby

BLOOMSBURG — A rural Catawissa man was locked up Monday after police say he struck his infant daughter in the side of the face while fighting with his girlfriend, arrest papers say.

Anthony Keen, 21, of 165 Mountain Road, struck the baby while attempting to punch Allison Jennings as the couple argued at 710 E. Second St. here.

Jennings told police that she was holding her daughter  when Keen began striking Jennings in the arms and body shortly before 2 p.m. One of his punches struck the child in the left side of the face, police state.

Stranded family rescued from Fishing Creek island

BLOOMSBURG — Rescuers managed to reach a family of five stranded on an island in Fishing Creek and bring them to safety late Monday.
The response began around 9 p.m. after the stranded people apparently summoned help.
Police and fire companies initially staged on Irondale Road, but couldn’t readily access the island from there. They moved to the Fernville side of the creek, where they reached the victims, who were about two miles from town along Creek Road.
