Bloom’s Naps Pizza celebrates 30 years
BLOOMSBURG -- In Bloomsburg, Naps doesn't mean time for a mid-afternoon snooze, Naps is synonymous with pizza. And for 30 years, Napoli Pizza has fed the community high-quality, great-tasting wings, subs, strombolis and, of course, pizza. It's a story of business success that starts as a love story: two people meet working at a pizza shop on Main Street in the early 1980s. One was a Bloomsburg born and raised young man, the other a young woman attending Bloomsburg University. They dreamt of opening their own restaurant, and, with a co-sign from his parents to help, they turned their dream into a reality. Napoli Pizza opened for business Super Bowl weekend, 1985. There were certain customer-centric ideals from the beginning, such as free delivery with no minimum purchase, a free Pepsi with any large pizza, having consistent hours and taking orders right up to the minute before closing and offering the same deals and discounts to customers no matter how they order -- dine in, pick up or delivery. They also vowed to have a quality product, to make fresh dough and sauce every day from scratch and use 100 percent mozzarella cheese. Proudly, all of these principles are still practiced and in place today. Technology In 1992, the front page of the Press Enterprise read, "Pizza Parlor: Snack on a Mac," when Naps was the first local restaurant to accept credit cards with their point-of-sale system for even just one slice of pizza. "I always had a passion for technology, so much so I attended Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech for electronics," said Gary Girton, co-owner. That may be the same reason Naps will be the exclusive "Push for Pizza" restaurant for Bloomsburg when a new national smartphone app is released later this spring. Push for Pizza will offer a simplified ordering system where customers can essentially just push a button for pizza to be delivered straight to their door. In the meantime, customers can order online or on their mobile phones by going to www.napspizza.com or downloading the Naps Pizza app. Naps employees get to take advantage of the restaurant's ever-evolving technologies, too. Naps offers Web-based recipe training on a touch-screen computer in the kitchen prep area. Management is able to monitor quality and consistency at all times via security cameras. Naps Pizza points This past year, Naps implemented a new loyalty rewards program. It's easy to sign up (just visit napspizza.com) and even easier to take advantage of because there is barely anything customers have to do. This cutting-edge system eliminates the need for customers to carry a card. Once someone signs up, it tracks their purchases automatically by recognizing the phone number when that person orders. The system then informs staff of any rewards one may have available and will add points for each of their purchases. Customers receive free pizza stix just for joining and free dessert for their birthday. Points earned on every purchase will score the VIPs discounts and, you guessed it, more free food. Community "Naps is privileged to serve Bloomsburg for 30 years," said co-owner Mary Girton. And that they have, whether it's offering local sports organizations discounted pizzas to sell for fundraising at athletic games, setting up for local events such as Brewfest and Destination Blues or just donating pizzas to a good cause. They have sold pizza at the Bloomsburg Renaissance to benefit the Bloomsburg Town Park and are proud to be a scoreboard sponsor at Bloomsburg Area High School. Recently, Naps has become a corporate partner with Bloomsburg University, where owners Mary and Gary Girton have always enjoyed volunteering their time, whether it was serving on the board for the Husky Club or running the chain gang at Bloomsburg University football games. Great employees Without hard-working and dedicated employees, a business cannot prosper. Naps Pizza has 20 great ones! The management team includes Allan Vandermark, 22 years; Phil Mingle, six years; and Bob Conrad, two years. The pizzaiolos who spend countless hours next to a 525-degree oven are Kevin Sabo, Chuck Babb, Corey Brockway, Austin Reeder and Brad Levan. The skilled sub makers who wear many hats from sub maker to grill master to deep frying guru and drivers who provide safe but quick transportation of customer's orders, no matter how big or small, are led by Kevin Simpson, a 13-year veteran. Being in business for 30 years has allowed the restaurant to watch former employees become very successful people. Some previous staff members are now doctors, lawyers and business leaders, and one is even a movie star. Future near and far Naps Pizza is always looking to the future and always has some exciting new things coming. Their new steam-injected oven being installed this month will enable them to bake their own sub rolls. Also, they have some exiting new wing flavors in development. Think BBQ potato chips and bacon ranch. Naps Pizza is at 319 East St. in downtown Bloomsburg. It is open seven days a week, Sunday through Thursday until 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m. Call 570-387-0511 to place an order, like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter and visit www.napspizza.com to become a VIP Rewards Member.
