BLOOMSBURG — A man faded in and out of consciousness early Tuesday after ramming a van head on into a traffic light pole around midnight at Bloomsburg Title & Tag, where Route 11 converges with East and Sixth Streets.

After bending the base of the traffic pole, the Ford Windstar’s battery popped out of the engine and slid down Sixth Street about 50 yards below a parked car.

Shattered glass and other car part debris was strewn across East Sixth Street.

A woman who lives just west of Bloomsburg Title & Tag along Sixth Street said the impact of the midnight crash shook her house.

“He was in bad shape,” a firefighter said, describing the driver after helping him from the van.

Police said the man was driving alone. He was transported by ambulance to nearby Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital for a possible helicopter transport to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

The man appeared to be traveling south on East Street toward Route 11 before losing control of the van and slamming into the pole.

Fire police had East Street-bound traffic from southbound Route 11 blocked after the crash. East Street traffic from downtown was routed to Fifth Street.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call Officer Nicholas Szkodny at 570-784-4155, ext. 173.

Check back in with the Press Enterprise later on Tuesday for more updates about what happened.
