Woman stabbed in Berwick

BERWICK -- A man stabbed a woman in an alley near LaSalle Street on Sunday night, police say. Now they're looking for the man, described as a white male in his early 20s between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8, with a thin build. He possibly has dark brown hair. Last night, he was wearing a black jacket, black knit cap and jeans. The woman, a 51-year-old, was standing in an alley in the 1000 block of Lasalle at 8:51 p.m. when a man approached her and asked if she had any money. When she didn't provide any, he stabbed her below the waistline in the "center part of her torso," police said.

Armed robbery alleged, Bloomsburg police seek BU student

BLOOMSBURG -- A man begged not to be shot as he was robbed at gunpoint on the street here Sunday night, charges say. Victim Jeffrey Rush told police he was pistol whipped and repeatedly attacked after he fell to the ground on East Third Street. But he managed to get to his feet, running to a back yard in the 400 block so he could call 9-1-1 around 9:20 p.m. His attackers, Carlin Marcus Edwards and Samuel Andre Jeannot, fled, but Edwards was picked up and in police custody within 90 minutes, charges say.

Firefighter's family flees burning home

BERWICK -- Fire ripped through a trailer in Berwick about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, but smoke alarms alerted the sleeping family inside, fire officials said. Flames destroyed the mobile home at 1633 Franklin St., the home of a fire department volunteer, said Berwick Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh. The place is a total loss but no one was hurt. Bloomsburg women battle IUP in NCAA Regional

ERIE --Bloomsburg University's women's basketball team came out and took the lead early in the second half, but were not able to hold off a late surge by IUP. The Huskies were eliminated from the NCAA Division II Tournament, losing 72-59. The Huskies had moved into the lead, 37-34, over IUP with 15:48 to go in the game. The Huskies were down 29-18 with 3:13 to go in the first half, but went on a late run in the first half to pull within four. Kayla Oxenrider led the Huskies with 17 points. Catherine Noack and Dana Wieller each added 10. Lauren Ellis grabbed five rebounds in the loss.

Driver killed in fiery wreck

BRIAR CREEK TWP. -- A 23-year-old man died in a fiery crash when the car he was driving veered off the road and hit a tree early Friday. Police identified the victim as Curtis Tyrrell, 42 Water Dam Road, Briar Creek Township. Deputy Coroner Linda Kessler said Tyrrell died on impact. When firefighters arrived at the scene along Shickshinny Valley Road, flames had already fully engulfed the 1997 Dodge Neon, said Summerhill Fire Chief Craig Fisher.

Firefighters called to Denny's

LIGHTSTREET -- Denny's restaurant was evacuated Thursday night after a haze of smoke filled the kitchen area, firefighters said. Crews were still using thermal-imaging cameras as of 9:50 p.m. in the hopes of finding the cause. Some climbed on the roof to check the heating and air conditioning units, while others inspected the lights inside in search of overheating ballasts. Then they started inspecting the exhausts above the stoves. "We won't stop until we find a source," said Lou Moser, first assistant chief for Lightstreet Community Fire Co.
