Man charged in death of 3-month-old in central Pa.

BLOOMFIELD, Pa. (AP) -- A 33-year-old central Pennsylvania man is facing criminal homicide charges after a 3-month-old girl died from head trauma. State police said Thursday they charged Joshua Michael Gross of New Bloomfield for the death of the girl. An ambulance crew was called to a home in Bloomfield on Saturday after the girl wasn't breathing. Police say the child's injuries showed "abusive head trauma consistent with shaking." Gross, engaged to the girl's mother, had previously been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and endangering a child's welfare.

Pa. woman pleads guilty to animal cruelty charges

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- A northeastern Pennsylvania woman accused in the starvation deaths of seven dogs has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of animal cruelty. The Citizens' Voice (http://bit.ly/1jqVENu) said 50-year-old Karen Reilly of Edwardsville pleaded guilty Thursday to four misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, 12 summary counts of cruelty to animals and related charges. In exchange, more than 30 additional charges were dropped. Reilly is also barred from owning animals for 15 years.

Protesting Utah student pays tuition in $1 bills

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A University of Utah student says he paid his tuition bill with 2,000 one-dollar bills as a silent protest against the rising cost of college. Luq Mughal brought a metal case full of greenbacks to the school Tuesday, the deadline for payment. He says he collected the cash from several banks. Mughal tells The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/1kY4Rij ) he spends weekends working to pay for his electrical engineering degree. The 21-year-old says he gets a discount because his father is a faculty member and acknowledges his situation is far from the worst on campus.

Indictment made in famous 'Goodfellas' heist from 1978

NEW YORK (AP) -- More than 30 years after the crime, a reputed mobster was indicted Thursday in the $6 million Lufthansa heist at Kennedy Airport that was dramatized in the Martin Scorsese movie "Goodfellas." The wide-ranging indictment naming Vincent Asaro, his son Jerome and three other defendants alleges murder, robbery, extortion, arson and bookmaking. Asaro was accused of participating in the Dec. 11, 1978, armed robbery -- one of the largest cash thefts in American history.

Pa. teacher charged with growing, selling pot

SOUTH PARK, Pa. (AP) -- A Pittsburgh-area high school teacher has been charged with conspiring to grow, possess and sell marijuana. Online court records show South Park Township police have charged 41-year-old Scott Houck, an 11-year veteran teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School, south of the city. West Jefferson Hills School District superintendent Michael Panza says school officials have reviewed computers and the teacher's room and determined there's no link between his alleged drug trafficking and his duties at the school, where Houck teaches tech classes.

Gust gaffe: Wyoming road sign warns 355 mph wind

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) -- It's windy in Wyoming, but still. Gusts of 355 mph and more? That's what one electronic road sign said in Casper on Saturday. The Wyoming Department of Transportation says a sign operator working from Cheyenne meant to type "35+" but mistakenly added another 5. The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/LU016c) the inflated wind gust message was posted for 17 minutes before the department noticed the mistake and corrected it. The whirlwind on social media lasted longer.
