Pa. man, 61, dies in fire after rescuing wife

PITTSFIELD, Pa. (AP) -- A northwestern Pennsylvania man has died of smoke inhalation after helping his wife escape a fire at their home and, apparently, trying to fight the flames with a fire extinguisher. State police in Warren have identified the victim as 61-year-old Darwin Durlin, of Pittsfield. Pittsfield is about 100 miles north of Pittsburgh. Police say firefighters arrived at the home shortly before midnight Sunday to find the home fully engulfed in flames. Police say Durlin's wife was treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation at Warren General Hospital.

Cyclist: Driver didn't see me stuck in windshield

MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) -- A Wisconsin man who became lodged in the windshield of a car that struck him said he turned to the driver and said, "Hello, I'm the guy you hit on the bicycle." The driver did not respond, but continued on, running a stop sign and hitting another vehicle before he arrived home, the cyclist, Steven Gove, told HTR Media about the Saturday incident (http://htrne.ws/1bI58jh ). The man finally noticed Gove when he stopped the car outside his home.

Suspect caught after he shares wanted photo on Facebook

FREELAND, Pa. (AP) -- Officers in Freeland arrested 35-year-old Anthony Lescowitch on Monday night, less than two hours after he shared a wanted photo of himself and taunted police for not being able to find him. Lescowitch shared the wanted bulletin minutes after Freeland police posted it on the department Facebook page Monday night, authorities said. He was being sought on assault-related charges.

Public's help sought after Pa. university shooting

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) -- Police are asking for help from the public in finding a suspect in a shooting on a university campus outside of Philadelphia. Chester police say a 19-year-old man was sitting inside a vehicle outside a gym at Widener University after playing basketball. They say a male approached and shot him in the head and left shoulder shortly before 9 p.m. Monday. Officers found the victim lying on the ground outside the vehicle. The student, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to a hospital, where he was reported in critical but stable condition after surgery.

Lawyers seek to clear teen executed in 1944

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- A 14-year-old black boy executed nearly 70 years ago is finally getting another day in court, and his lawyers plan to argue Tuesday for a new trial, saying his conviction was tainted by the segregationist-era justice system and scant evidence. George Stinney was found guilty in 1944 of killing two white girls, ages 7 and 11. The trial lasted less than a day in the tiny Southern mill town of Alcolu, separated, as most were in those days, by race.

Snow shutting schools early

A storm is shutting schools down early today, as forecasters expect between 2-4 inches of snow to fall in our area through evening hours. All week, meteorologists have been trying to pinpoint when this storm will hit, how much snow it will dump and when, said Elyse Colbert, National Weather Service meteorologist. "With this system there's been a lot of disagreement between the different models," she said. But it now appears snow will fall through evening, Colbert said. "The evening rush hour is going to be a lot worse than this morning's."

Electrician killed by 1-ton switchbox at Pa. plant

RED LION, Pa. (AP) -- Authorities say an electrician is dead after a one-ton electrical box fell on him at a water treatment plant in York County. York Area Regional Police identify the victim as 55-year-old Benedict Todt of Gardeners, Adams County. Authorities believe Todt was installing the switchbox Monday when it fell on him, trapping him beneath it. York County Deputy Coroner Terry Meyers says no one witnessed the accident. Authorities say Todt was killed at the Red Lion Water Authority Pumping Station, which is under expansion. He worked for Lobar Construction Services.

Gunman at large after killing 5-year-old

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Police on Monday sought information on a gunman who killed a 5-year-old girl and shot her mother in the head while the two of them sat in a vehicle in a residential neighborhood. Authorities identified the slain girl as Jermani Brooks. Her mother, 33-year-old Noni Brooks, was hospitalized in fair condition. The two were shot Sunday night on Cleveland's west side. Police said a man in a green SUV pulled up to their vehicle, got out and opened fire before fleeing.
