New rules aim to rid schools of junk foods

WASHINGTON (AP) -- High-calorie sports drinks and candy bars will be removed from school vending machines and cafeteria lines as soon as next year, replaced with diet drinks, granola bars and other healthier items. The Agriculture Department said Thursday that for the first time it will make sure that all foods sold in the nation's 100,000 schools are healthier by expanding fat, calorie, sugar and sodium limits to almost everything sold during the school day.

Mom sues Monster energy drink over teen's death

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The mother of a teenager who died from cardiac arrhythmia last year is blaming his death on Monster Beverage Corp., alleging in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that his death was caused by habitually drinking the company's energy drink. Alex Morris, 19, went into cardiac arrest during the early morning hours of July 1 and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gimme shelter: Police look for info on abandoned dog

SCOTT TWP. - Township police are looking for more information about an abandoned dog found tied up outside the Short Stop Mart near Lightstreet around noontime Wednesday. He had a note attached that identified him as "Jagger," a year-old pit bull/labrador mix, and asked someone to find him a new home. Anyone with information on the dog can call Scott Township Police at 784-9114, they say. Reporter Leon Bogdan will have all the details on the dog find in Thursday's Press Enterprise.
