Family flees fire

BERWICK — Lint buildup in a dryer vent caused a small fire Sunday afternoon, but the homeowner, her daughter, and their dogs managed to escape unharmed, fire officials said.

Tonya Shultz, 32, of 619 Hillside Drive, and her 9-year-old daughter, Trinity Castello, were drying clothes in the basement around 2:30 p.m. when they started to smell smoke, she told Berwick Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh. Then the smoke alarms went off and the breakers tripped, shutting off power to the house.
