Pa. man admits beating 'Amish Mafia' star

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) -- A central Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to beating a star of the TV series "Amish Mafia." Imir Williams admitted Thursday to assaulting and stalking girlfriend Esther Schmucker, who appears on the Discovery Channel show based in Lancaster County. Authorities say Williams repeatedly punched Schmucker on Oct. 31 at her Strasburg home and broke her nose, cheekbone and several teeth.

Pregnant nurse fired in Pa. over flu shot

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) -- A pregnant woman who refused to get a flu shot due to her fear of miscarrying has been fired from her job with a health care company. Dreonna Breton worked as a registered nurse for Horizons Healthcare Services in central Pennsylvania. The company requires all personnel to get the influenza vaccine. Breton contends the immunizations may not be safe enough for pregnant women. She suffered two miscarriages earlier this year, and doesn't want to risk a third.

Christmas tree made of bottles sparkles in Lithuania

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) -- Here's a recycling project just for the holidays: A 13-foot-tall Christmas tree made of 1,100 empty bottles of champagne and sparkling water. Lithuanian policeman Dalius Valukonis says he spent three years and hundreds of hours of his free time to create the tree using bottles he got from restaurants, bars, family and friends. The non-drinker said Saturday a metal structure with special hooks and construction foam holds the bottles in place. It's an eye-catcher that makes motorists in the town of Lazdijai near the Polish border snap pictures.

Family says crucifix formed on cheesecake

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- A suburban Phoenix family says their Christmas cheesecake sent them the message of a holiday miracle. The Arizona Republic reports that when the family in Scottsdale, Ariz., pulled their dessert out of the oven, it cracked as it cooled and formed a crucifix. The family members, who have not given their names publicly, say the crucifix is a message. They say they won't be eating the cheesecake. Instead, they plan on selling it and donating the money to a local charity or church.

Police: No beer led to stabbing

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina authorities say a 44-year-old woman angry at a man for returning home without beer on Christmas beat and stabbed him with a ceramic squirrel. The Charleston County Sheriff's office says in a report that deputies found a man covered with blood when they arrived at Helen Williams' North Charleston home early Wednesday. She told investigators the man fell and cut himself, but couldn't explain why her hands and clothes were also bloody.

Gambler rewards man who returned $300G left in cab

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A poker player who left $300,000 in the back seat of a Las Vegas taxi made good on his promise this week, handing over a $10,000 reward to the honest cabbie who returned the stash. Yellow Checker Star Cab Company CEO Bill Shranko confirmed Friday that Gerardo Gamboa had been paid by the poker player. The cab company also honored the driver's good deed by naming him employee of the year, awarding him $1,000 and giving him a gift certificate to a Las Vegas steakhouse.

Deer makes appearance at Pa. sporting goods store

READING, Pa. (AP) -- Shoppers looking for post-Christmas bargains have gotten a surprise at a northeastern Pennsylvania sporting goods store after a deer decided to join them. WFMZ-TV says the deer walked through the front door of a Dick's Sporting Goods store in Reading on Thursday afternoon. Store manager Brad Meyer says the deer slipped on the floor and a customer tackled it to the ground, preventing any injuries to customers or damage to the store. The store called the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which arrived and removed the deer. There's no word on where the deer was released.

Pa. wife, 2 others arrested in alleged murder plot

ROSTRAVER, Pa. (AP) -- The wife of a Pennsylvania man and two other people have been arrested for allegedly plotting to murder her husband on Christmas Eve and mask the crime by pulling his teeth. Authorities allege that 26-year-old Kimberly Jane Thompkins, 24-year-old Robert Crosby, and 18-year-old Daryith Lorraine Stevens plotted to kill Adam Thompkins. On Tuesday Kimberly Thompkins allegedly drove her husband to Cedar Creek Park. That's 25 miles south of Pittsburgh. Crosby allegedly stabbed Adam Thompkins there just before noon.
