Penn State student dies in jump from garage

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Authorities say a Penn State University student died when he jumped from a parking garage in downtown State College. The student was identified as 22-year-old Andrew M. Magargle of Pasadena, Md. Officers responded to a call at about 9:30 a.m. Friday, according to a statement released Saturday. Centre County coroner Scott Sayers says Magargle died as a result of chest trauma and his death has been ruled a suicide.

Dying Pa. girl gets Christmas carol wish granted

WEST READING, Pa. (AP) -- Thousands of Christmas carolers are gathered to sing outside the home of a terminally ill Pennsylvania girl. The singers are fulfilling one of 8-year-old Delaney Brown's wishes: a huge holiday sing-along outside her West Reading home. On her "Team Laney" Facebook page, a picture of Delaney giving two thumbs up was accompanied by the text, "I can hear you now!!! Love you!" Delaney was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in May. Her family says earlier this week doctors gave her only days to live.

Hospital: Teen who was shot at Colo. school dies

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) -- A suburban Denver high school student who was shot in the head by a classmate died Saturday afternoon, hospital officials and her family said. Claire Davis, 17, was in critical condition after being shot at point-blank range at Arapahoe High School on Dec. 13. "It is with heavy hearts that we share that at 4:29 p.m. this afternoon, Claire Davis passed away, with her family at her side," a statement from Littleton Adventist Hospital said.

Police find heroin stamped with 'Obamacare'

HATFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Massachusetts state police say they've stopped a car carrying 1,250 packets of heroin stamped "Obamacare" and "Kurt Cobain" and arrested the four people inside it. Police say a trooper was making a traffic stop in Northampton when another car passed and he noticed several violations. He stopped the car a short time later in nearby Hatfield and found the driver wasn't licensed to drive it. A state police dog found the bags of heroin. The four arrested people have been charged with heroin trafficking.

Ex-cop gets prison for sex assault on girl, 14

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A former Philadelphia police officer who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl at a suburban motel has been sentenced to six to 20 years in state prison. The Bucks County Courier Times said 37-year-old Anthony Dattilo wept during his sentencing Friday and apologized for embarrassing his family. Dattilo will also be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life. The 12-year police force veteran was arrested in May 2012 after the victim sent text messages to family members saying she was being held against her will at a hotel in Bensalem.

Pair pleads guilty in slayings of 3 in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) -- Two half-brothers have pleaded guilty to murder charges in the drug-related slayings of three people in northeastern Pennsylvania last year. In Luzerne County Court on Friday, 19-year-old Shawn Hamilton pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and 17-year-old Sawud Davis pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree murder. The shootings in July 2012 in Plymouth claimed the lives of 21-year-old Bradley Swartwood, 17-year-old Nicholas Maldonado and 15-year-old Lisa Abaunza.

Alleged Craigslist killers plead not guilty in Sunbury

SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) -- Newlyweds accused of luring a stranger through a Craigslist ad, stabbing him to death and dumping his body in an alley have been ordered to stand trial on charges including homicide, conspiracy and robbery. Eighteen-year-old Miranda Barbour and 22-year-old Elytte Barbour pleaded not guilty at separate hearings Friday in the central Pennsylvania city of Sunbury. They're being held without bail in the Nov. 11 death of 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara of Port Trevorton. Police say Elytte Barbour told investigators that they wanted to kill someone together.

Man proposes to girlfriend during arrest

ELK CITY, Okla. (AP) -- Talk about a marriage proposal to remember. An Oklahoma man proposed to his girlfriend last week while an officer tried to arrest him on two outstanding warrants. An officer spotted Justin Harrel of Elk City in a local park last Friday and discovered that he had outstanding warrants out of two counties for obtaining cash or merchandise by bogus check, according to court documents. Police said Harrel resisted arrest at first.

Pa. pastor defrocked after performing gay wedding

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The United Methodist church defrocked a pastor from central Pennsylvania on Thursday for violating doctrine by officiating his son's gay marriage, leaving the minister shocked and upset that he could be punished for an "act of love." Frank Schaefer immediately appealed the penalty, which he believed was meted out reluctantly by many members of the regional Board of Ordained Ministry.
